My Family Sweatshirt

IMG_2473.jpeg

Every year my grandmother gives her children and grandchildren gifts for Christmas. This past year my mother and I decided to take this tradition over and make something extra special and meaningful for everyone. We designed this sweatshirt first by creating the family crest. Each element of the shirt has a different meaning.

The shirt is a forest green, to symbolize hope, joy, and loyalty in love.  The writing is white, which means peace and sincerity. These characteristics are common among my family members. The shield is being supported by two animals, which also have historical meaning.  A stag represents strength and fortitude. A panther is fierce but loving and protective of her children. The cotton boll represents Mississippi which is where my grandfather grew up.  The wheat represents Kansas which is where my grandmother grew up and went on to raise my mother, aunts, and uncle.  It also symbolizes hope and abundance. The Triquetra is the three-cornered shape accompanied by a circle. The triquetra is sometimes drawn weaving around a circle, symbolizing unity. The circle commonly represents a symbol of eternity while the three corners represent many things such as, the earth, sea, and sky or the past, present and future. Next to the Triquetra is a modernized Celtic tree of life. The tree of life and its symbol is featured in nearly all forms of history and religion. It symbolizes both harmony and balance.  It was believed that the tree had the ability to grant people prosperity. It is also known to represent wisdom, strength and longevity. This modern version with its outstretched circling arms symbolizes acceptance, tolerance, and unity. Finally, the motto is Una domus sumus, we are one family.
